Gelato and pastry shops in Taranto: artisan gelato, pasticciotto, zeppole, sporcamuss and the sweets of the Puglian tradition.
History
Puglia's pastry tradition is rich and indulgent, and Taranto is no exception. Between historic pastry shops and artisan gelaterias, the city offers a trail of sweetness for breakfast, snacks and celebrations.
What to see
Among the traditional sweets stand out the pasticciotto (shortcrust pastry filled with custard), the zeppole di San Giuseppe (fried or baked choux filled with custard, typical of March), the sporcamuss (puff pastries with custard and icing sugar that "dirty your face"), sweet taralli and almond sweets.
Artisan gelato is a must, especially on summer evenings: the gelaterias serve classic flavours and creations with local produce, from figs to almonds. Many pastry shops also make excellent coffee and breakfast treats.
A sweet stop, perhaps strolling the seafront with a gelato in hand, is one of the little pleasures not to be missed on a visit to Taranto.
Did you know…
- The zeppola di San Giuseppe is the typical March sweet, fried or baked.
