Taranto sits at the heart of the Ionian arc, well connected to the rest of Puglia and Italy. Whether you arrive by plane, train or car, reaching it is easy: here are all the options for planning your journey at its best.
What to see
By plane. The reference airports are two: Bari Karol Wojtyła (about 100 km) and Brindisi Salento (about 75-90 km). Both have domestic and international connections. From the hubs you continue by train, connecting bus or rental car.
By train. Taranto central station is in the heart of the city, well served by Trenitalia with regional and Intercity connections. The line links it to Bari, Brindisi, Lecce and, via connections, to Italy's main cities. The journey from Brindisi takes about an hour.
By car. Taranto is reached from the A14 (Bari Nord exit, then the state road) or the SS106 Jonica, which hugs the sea coming from Calabria and Basilicata. From the Itria Valley you arrive on the SS172. A car is recommended for exploring the territory.
By ship. The port of Taranto welcomes cruise ships; the city is a fascinating port of call, with the landmark sights within walking distance.
