Taranto can be visited all year round, thanks to its mild Mediterranean climate. But each season has its own character: here's how to choose the period best suited to what you're looking for.
What to see
Spring (April-June). For many, the ideal time: pleasant weather, long days, nature in bloom and fewer crowds. It's the season of Holy Week, with its unique rites, and of trekking in the ravines. From late May the sea starts to be enjoyable.
Summer (July-August). The beach season par excellence, with warm, crystal-clear waters and the lidos in full swing. It's also the time of events: festivals, concerts and sagre everywhere. To factor in: intense heat, crowded beaches and higher prices.
Autumn (September-October). An excellent choice: the sea is still warm in September, the climate is gentle, prices fall and the crowds thin out. It's the time of the grape harvest, the sagre and the tastings.
Winter (November-March). Ideal for cultural tourism: museums, the Old Town and the villages without queues, with the charm of the clear days. It's the best season for enjoying the mussels, and the Christmas period brings luminarie and nativity scenes.
