Public road transport is the most practical way to get around Taranto without a car, both in the city and towards the coastal resorts and the province's towns.
What to see
Urban buses. The city network links the districts with the centre, the railway station and the seafront. In summer the lines towards the beaches are generally strengthened, particularly San Vito, handy for reaching the sea without a car.
Ferries to the islands. A distinctive service is the motorboats linking the city to San Pietro island (Cheradi Islands) in the bathing season: public transport that is already a tourist experience in itself.
Provincial coaches. Several companies link Taranto to the province's towns — Martina Franca, Grottaglie, Manduria, Massafra and the marinas — and to the other Puglian cities. They're useful for those without a car, though frequencies are lower on holidays.
