The beaches of Taranto: where to swim in the city

Taranto city and shoreline

The city beaches of Taranto: San Vito, Lido Bruno, the Cheradi Islands and the southern bays. Where to swim near the centre, between golden sand and crystal-clear sea.

History

You don't need to travel far from Taranto to find beautiful sea. The city of the two seas offers beaches and bays within minutes of the centre, between golden sand, clear waters and striking views of the gulf. The finest lie on the southern side, towards San Vito, and on the islands closing the Mar Grande.

What to see

San Vito is the main city beach, a few kilometres from the centre: a long stretch of fine golden sand with shallow waters, ideal for families, dominated by the lighthouse and the ancient San Vito Tower. From here you enjoy a striking view of the city mirrored in the water, with spectacular sunsets.

Continuing along the coast you meet Lido Bruno and other beaches, alternating free stretches and equipped lidos. Southwards open wilder bays such as the Baia di Tramontone, the Baia della Torretta and Porto Cupo, mixing sand and rocks.

Closing the gulf are the Cheradi Islands: San Pietro island, open to bathing, is reached by ferry and offers a lido with beach, pine wood, play and picnic areas. San Paolo island, instead, is military and closed to visitors.
