History
Knowing where to find an open pharmacy is useful on any trip. Taranto has a widespread network of pharmacies, in the centre and the districts, with a rota system guaranteeing cover at night and on holidays too.
What to see
Hours and rotas. Pharmacies generally open mornings and afternoons, closing on Sundays. Service is guaranteed 24 hours a day thanks to the rota system: the on-duty pharmacies are listed on every pharmacy's door and on the provincial pharmacists' association channels.
Healthcare. For non-urgent needs outside GP hours, the out-of-hours medical service (guardia medica) operates. For emergencies the reference is 118 or the single number 112, and the hospital A&E.
For foreign tourists. EU citizens can access care with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). For non-EU citizens, travel health insurance is recommended.
In the seaside resorts, pharmacy opening hours are generally extended in summer to cope with the tourist influx.
