The food festivals (sagre) of the province of Taranto: popular feasts devoted to typical produce, craft markets and the food traditions of the Ionian villages.
History
The sagre are the popular soul of the territory: village feasts devoted to a typical product, where the community gathers among stalls, music and open-air tables. In the province of Taranto they are numerous, mostly between spring and autumn, and they are the most authentic way to get to know the local food culture.

What to see
Every village has its own speciality to celebrate: from the sagre devoted to mussels and fish along the coast, to those of the grape and wine in the Primitivo country, to the feasts of orecchiette, figs, bombette and baked goods in the hinterland.
The sagre are concentrated mainly in summer and autumn, when the climate allows long open-air evenings and the produce of the land comes to ripeness. Alongside the food there are folk music, dancing, games and craft stalls.
Cities and villages also host markets: of crafts, antiques and, in the festive season, the typical Christmas markets, an occasion to buy local produce and ceramics.
