What to see

The centrepiece is the MArTA, the National Archaeological Museum, which alongside its permanent collection — with the celebrated Gold of Taranto — regularly organises temporary exhibitions devoted to archaeology, Magna Graecia and the themes of the ancient Mediterranean.

In the city, the historic palazzi of the Old Town and the Borgo Umbertino host displays of contemporary art, photography, craft and design, often tied to identity themes such as the sea, industry and the city's memory.

There is no shortage of exhibitions devoted to ceramics, with the nearby hub of Grottaglie representing a nationally recognised craft excellence.
